While American and European students may be well-familiar with the “university town” concept, the idea is relatively new in Malaysia. Paramount Corporation Berhad in particular, has been exploring the notion of having a community centered around an educational institution.
With the highly successful Paramount Utropolis development in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, the group is now embarking on the Utropolis concept in Batu Kawan, which will be anchored by KDU University College Penang.
Paramount Corporation Berhad Group chairman and executive director Datuk Teo Chiang Quan was quoted saying a total of RM220il will be spent on the new KDU Penang University College campus in Batu Kawan on the 12ha site. When completed, the Utropolis would be able to accommodate up to 5,000 students.
The integrated Utropolis Batu Kawan development would also include residential apartments, commercial lots and a retail centre.
