Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) has recently awarded the contract for the proposed major facelift of The Chowrasta Market, Penang.

The Chowrasta Market, one of the oldest markets in Penang, will be transformed into an iconic landmark in the state. The original Chowrasta Market was built in 1890 by the then George Town Municipal Council.

When completed. the Penang Chowrasta market is poised to be the first GBI (Green Building Index) market when the MPPP gives this heritage market a re-development project costing RM12mil. This is the first re-development since 1961 for the market that was first built in the 1800s.

Records show that the original wet market, the earliest one in Penang and within the currently designated UNESCO heritage buffer zone, was built sometime in the 1870s.

Arkitek LLA Sdn. Bhd. (LLA), a renowned architectural firm in Penang famed for their works in heritage and conservation, has been appointed by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) to upgrade this heritage building. Unitech is a member of the consortium of consultants led by LLA for the provision of quantity surveying and cost management services.
